Windows Vista - here at last

13 November 2006

Microsoft acknowledges that the latest version of its desktop operating system, Windows Vista, has taken far longer to develop than any of its previous releases. But the wait is - almost - over. Windows Vista will shortly be available to business customers and is on target for a general launch in January.

Adobe announces Acrobat 8

13 November 2006

Adobe has announced the next version of its portable document application, Acrobat. Acrobat, the most commonly used platform-independent format for exchanging documents, is going to come under pressure after the launch of Windows Vista, when Microsoft introduces its own rival file format to Adobe Acrobat's PDF.

The power of three

13 November 2006

With so much attention being focused on the imminent arrival of Window Vista, it's easy to forget that Microsoft is about to ship the latest versions of Office and Exchange. Individually, these are important enough upgrades, but when you look at these three products together, you see a far more compelling argument to upgrade.

Internet Explorer and Firefox square up for a showdown

20 September 2006

Not that long ago, it was assumed that the 'browser wars' were over. The browser that was once king, Netscape Navigator, was all but gone - and Internet Explorer was almost universal. Publishing has always been a complex, specialised process. In the early days of desktop publishing, Ventura Publisher and PageMaker led the field, but QuarkXpress soon saw them both off and became the recognised standard publishing application. Adobe's never stood still - and, with its Creative Suite, Adobe is taking back its market share - with good reason.

Project management - the skill every IT professional should have?

19 July 2006

A lot is expected of IT professionals. If it runs on a PC (or server) you're expected to understand it, deploy it and support it. As we all know, that's not the case - technology is getting more complex, not simpler, so there's always more to learn. But the most important IT skill today has little to do with technology - it's the ability to plan and manage IT projects.

How do you get exactly the right training? Just ask!

19 July 2006

We all now shop with an 'add to basket' mentality - perhaps assuming that what you see on the shelf/Web page is all that's available. This can even apply to training courses. But does this always deliver the most effective training solution?
